School is out and vacation season is now officially underway! What can you do to ensure you and your family are safe on the road this travel season? Prevention and planning may take a little effort on your part up front, but can spare you from dealing with the consequences of a breakdown – or worse yet, a highway crash – later.
Simply Superior Auto Body has compiled our favorite summer driving tips into three main categories; before you hit the road, safety is key and where the rubber meets the road.
Before You Hit the Road
Regular maintenance is key to the longevity of any vehicle, however, if you are planning a road trip you, may want to get your car serviced prior to leaving. Preventative maintenance will reduce your risk of an unwanted breakdown during your travels.
Pack an Emergency Roadside Kit with cell phone, cell phone car charger and first aid supplies in case of an emergency while you are on the road. Other recommended items include; flashlight, any necessary medications, flares, jumper cables, tire pressure gauge, jack, maps, blankets and nonperishable food and drinking water.
Safety Is Key
Buckle up everyone who is traveling in the vehicle should be buckled up! If your little ones are still utilizing child safety seats, be sure they are properly secured. Adults, too, need to be securely fastened to set an example and stay safe, as well.
While children can be a joy to have on a family vacation, you need to keep in mind that all children 13 and under should ride in the back seat. You should also remember to lock your vehicle when exiting so that children do not play and get trapped inside your car. Also, never leave your children unattended in or around your vehicle as elevated temperatures can harm your children if they are left inside a vehicle alone, even for a short period of time
Where the Rubber Meets the Road
Stay alert while driving by getting plenty of rest the night before. If you start to feel drowsy, consider staying overnight in a hotel or resort. Keep your eyes on the road, hands on the wheel and concentrate on the task of driving without the distraction of your cell phone. Distracted driving includes driving while using your cell phone, texting, drinking, eating or any other activity that takes your attention away from the task at hand. Please refrain from distracted driving to ensure your family’s safety, as well as your own and others on the road.

Speeding is not only a bad idea, but it is also dangerous and can be costly if you are caught. Obey all speed limits and adjust your speed if you encounter bad weather or other traffic conditions that require you to slow down.
